The day you died, I was there
I saw you crucified.
I was in the place
Where they flogged and mocked you
Struck you on the face.
I’d watched as they’d placed
The crown of thorns on your head
Hail, O King of the Jews, they said.
I even think looking back
I may have shouted with the crowd
Crucify him, Crucify.
As I stood by the cross
In the dark that day
My thoughts ran back
And I heard Jesus say
You must be born again.
And He’d told me that night
He was God’s Son
He was the one
Who would die on a tree
So that I could be – a Pharisee!
Reconciled to Father God.
I really hadn’t understood
I thought that by being good
I could attain eternal life
But now it’s beginning to dawn on me
It’s only through death there will be life.
That Friday Joseph came to me
Will you help me to carry – Jesus
I want to place Him in my tomb.
We took Him down,
Wrapped the body with care
Took Him to the garden & left Him there.
We had Passover to prepare.
There was lots to do
A lamb had been slain
Through my head were running the words
You really must be born again
And now having seen how He died
I’m just beginning to understand
That Jesus was just as He said
The Son of Man – God’s Lamb.
So during the feast
I will reflect on everything He said
Maybe I will really believe
If God raises Him from the dead.
