Cherry Tree

Categories: Nature

All winter through
The cherry tree stands
Firm and unyielding
To the sharp winds blowing
Across and up from the valley below
In Heurtevent.
It weathers the frost
And long days of snow
Quietly renewing its strength.

As the days grow longer
The golden drift of daffodils
Beneath cherry branches
Send up their green spears
And the tree rejoices
For it knows soon, very soon
As each yellow trumpet appears
The clarion call to blossom will sound.
Then as the trumpets fade away
Each pregnant bud will give birth
Sprinkling the early spring grass
With delicate opal flakes
Leaving behind tiny bourgeons
Prelude to twin fruits
The first fruits of summer
Cherries, ripe, juicy, sweet
Yet now falling on the empty chair
Where once sat the master of the house.
