Early Departure

Categories: Bereavement

Lying awake night after night
My heart heavy in my chest
Thoughts chase around and around in my mind
Allowing me no rest.

I ask myself, could I have done more
To keep you by my side
My brain retraces every detail
Of the days before you died.

As the long night gradually turns to day
Reason says, no more could have been done
To keep you longer with us here
For God had simply said to you,
“It’s time for you to come.”

So now I pray, Lord give me peace
Quieten my mind and heart
Help me to trust your divine will
Your timing for him to depart.
